Grarrr Apple

girl in love
Well, I was really happy about getting the new computer and all that. Yay! A computer that works!

Except one of the main things I do with my computer is use it to watch stuff. Which is to say I like to hook it up to the TV because that's so much nicer than watching things on a little monitor screen.

Too bad I can't do that anymore.

(this is complicated and garbly)
Apple's changed its standard video port to Mini Data Port. Okay, that's fine. They make no Mini Data Port to video adapter. That sucks. No one else does, either. And yet I thought I was still good to go... I could get their Mini Data Port to DVI adapter, then plug my DVI to video adapter into that and then plug it into the TV, right?

Nope!

The Mini Data Port to DVI adapter is actually a Mini Data Port to DVI-D adapter. My DVI to video adapter is DVI-I. DVI-D and DVI-I can't be plugged into one another. The girl at the Apple Store who sold me the Mini Data Port (MDP from here out because I am tired of typing it) to DVI adapter did tell me this, but she also told me I could go to Fry's and get an adapter that would work with the thing she was selling me.

Optimistically, I went to Fry's! No DVI-D to video adapters to be found? Well, poop. However, I did find a DVI-D to DVI-I adapter. So I got that. Now I can plug the two together! Yay! A solution!

Still nope!

I hooked them up, plugged it into the TV and the computer and... nothing. This is using an RCA component cable, btw. Which as far as Wikipedia is telling me, is analog. DVI-I supports analog, but DVI-D does not. So I'm thinking that's my problem. How do I fix it? I don't know. I tried an S-Video cable since I dunno what S-Video even is or if it's analog or digital or whateverthefuck but that don't work either. So I just spent over $50 on shit that doesn't work. Go me. I will be going back up to the Apple Store tomorrow and demand a refund or a solution.

I may be able to do this if I get a MDP to VGA adapter and then a VGA to DVI adapter but I don't know this for sure and I don't know that I feel like spending another $50 to find out... also VGA looks kind of shitty to me. I dunno.

In short: I am starting to really hate you, Apple.

computer
Well, I brought Sir in to the Apple Store and yarbled on about my problems to the tech dude for like five minutes. He disappeared with the computer for like ten minutes. Then returned and said "So... how would you like a new computer?" I was like "Yeah I was kind of hoping you'd say that."

So I have a new computer now.

What's more, they redesigned the MacBooks since I got Sir so it's a new, weird-looking computer. It's smaller but I think it's actually heavier? XD I dunno?

Only pain in the ass things is it uses Firewire 800 and I only have 400 cables, so I can't plug Candy in right now. I'll probably go to Fry's after dinner and get a new cable for that. I also can't use the A/V adapter I had as this thing has a Mini Display Port thing instead of DVI or... whatever the old one was (I don't even know). The former is a small annoyance as cables are not that expensive (I don't think... actually I haven't bought a cable in forever? XD) and they do make 800 to 400 adapter cables... but the latter is kind of really irritating as they haven't come out with a Mini Display Port to video adapter, and no one else makes one either. All I can think to do is get a Mini Display Port to DVI adapter but Apple's of course also the only one who makes those and they're $30! That's ridiculous. Why must you continually change your standards, Apple?

Oh well. At least my computer works.

I can't decide what to name it, or if I should just leave it named Sir Christopher still. It looks kind of evil (and doesn't look much like a Sir Christopher).

I finally don't have to watch Code Geass anymore!

I would have liked the end, like, ten million times better sans that bit with C.C. right before the credits. GJ, Code Geass, you still managed to SURPRISE ENDING! Fuck you.

In other news, I'm going to be taking Sir to the Apple Store tomorrow. Again. Because I'm sick of putting up with him NOT WORKING all the time. I bet anyone anything that they just replace the logic board and super drive.

Fun part is that my hard drives are so clogged up with anime I'm never going to watch that I have no room to back things up. So I'm having a DVD BURNING PARTY except Sir's DVD burner doesn't work. So glad we have an external one lying around!

So far burned 17.1GB out of... probably about 50 I have to burn. Uuuuuugh.
computer
Now this thing is refusing to read any burned DVD I stick in it. It just won't mount them... instead, it opens up Toast like I just put in a blank disc. I just tested one on Dad's computer, and his reads it fine. But Sir thinks it's blank. WTF.

I also learned that even after they replaced whatever the heck in the CD drive my car still doesn't read music discs I burned with this computer.

I really am wondering if I should just demand a completely new computer. I don't remember if I ever mentioned it here, but when I took Sir to the Apple store before and they kept him for two weeks but couldn't actually figure out what was wrong with him... they ended up replacing his logic board, but it didn't actually fix any of the problems I was having. So I dunno WTF. There's something wrong, no one can figure out what or how to fix it.

Gonna call AppleCare real quick and see if they have any theories on the DVDs not reading issue.

Quince has died. Again. Was working fiiiiiiiine this morning, as I farted around online instead of getting ready for school, but once I got to school I opened him up and he would not turn on. I called Applecare up since I had time before class (service is amazingly quick when you call them at eight in the morning!), and none of the guy's suggestions magically revived him, so he is now in the hands of Merritt Consulting once more. Hopefully it will be a lot faster than it was the last time.

The best part of this is that, of course, all my notes and shit are on him, as well as my essays for H to H that I wrote yesterday (which I had not yet emailed to my teacher... I went and talked to her, though, and she said not to worry about it). The notes won't be a problem unless he's still not working at the end of the semester.

So.

I may not be online all that often for a bit.

...holy shit what am I going to do in Barbarians? Three hours without the internet to distract me? I'm going to die.
