Eden of the East

  • 13th Apr, 2009 at 12:25 PM
thumbs up
I was going to wait make a post once I'd gotten around to watching the other shows that look interesting this season (I dunno why I bother since I never finish anything anyway, but there's a few that I can't resist checking out). But, argh, I'm obsessed.

Eden of the East! I don't even really know what it's about, but it is so intriguing. I have already watched the first episode four times (and parts of it more than that).

Totally recommend giving it a try. It's by Production I.G, so you can expect quality there. The director is Kenji Kamiyama, who directed Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (which I never watched, actually haha). And it mysteriously has character designs by Chika Umino, the artist of Honey and Clover. Not really sure where that came from, but whatever! Like I care! Oh yeah, also music by Kenji Kawai. Main voice cast isn't anyone too prolific so I won't go into that...

The plot, like I said, I have no idea. According to ANN: "On November 22, 2010 ten missiles strike Japan. However, this unprecedented terrorist act, later to be called as "Careless Monday," does not result in any apparent victims, and is soon forgotten by almost everyone. Then, 3 months later... Saki Morimi is a young woman currently in the United States of America on her graduation trip. But just when she is in front of the White House, Washington DC, she gets into trouble, and only the unexpected intervention of one of her fellow countrymen saves her. However, this man, who introduces himself as Akira Takizawa, is a complete mystery. He appears to have lost his memory. and he is stark naked, except for the gun he holds in one hand, and the mobile phone he's holding with the other hand. A phone that is charged with 8,200,000,000 yen in digital cash."

Actually there hasn't been any mention of Careless Monday yet except a headline shown on a TV, and Akira (who I like to refer to as Naked Guy) hasn't discovered that he's got any money yet, and he doesn't even introduce himself as Akira Takizawa until the very end of the episode, but okay. That's fine.

It's apparently only going to be eleven episodes, though there's going to be a movie later this year (as to whether it will continue the story or be a retelling or a whole new story, I dunno).

It's really interesting, though! Especially Naked Guy, who doesn't remember anything about his identity but clearly remembers how to do things of dubious legality (so who is he?). I can't wait for more of this show... It's been a long time since I was obsessed to this degree about a show. I mean, sure, I go on and on about shows I like but this is different. This is consuming my thoughts constantly. e_e

(Quick rundown of other things I've watched:
FMA Brotherhood - We're all watching this anyway, aren't we?
K-ON! - Cute, dumb. Kyoani's getting really good at this sort of thing.
Shangri-la - Less cute, dumb in an entirely different way. Intrigued me for about five minutes before I lost interest in favor of Eden of the East. e_e)

Also if any fans of Haruhi Suzumiya haven't been watching the Haruhi-chan shorts... why haven't you? They are so special. Kyon in a maid costume! Itsuki dressed up as Mount Fuji! Balloon decoration contests! Being mean to Mikuru! Ryoko Asakura as a tiny midget! They're all up subbed on YouTube, and they're really short. I think I like them better than the actual show. XD

You know what? I really love Kannagi. I have not laughed this hard at a show in ages. Every episode is better than the last (though I really dunno if anything can top ep 9's crazy love octagon or whatever it ended up being).

(Though to be honest I can't say I didn't see this joke coming a mile away.)

I finally don't have to watch Code Geass anymore!

I would have liked the end, like, ten million times better sans that bit with C.C. right before the credits. GJ, Code Geass, you still managed to SURPRISE ENDING! Fuck you.

In other news, I'm going to be taking Sir to the Apple Store tomorrow. Again. Because I'm sick of putting up with him NOT WORKING all the time. I bet anyone anything that they just replace the logic board and super drive.

Fun part is that my hard drives are so clogged up with anime I'm never going to watch that I have no room to back things up. So I'm having a DVD BURNING PARTY except Sir's DVD burner doesn't work. So glad we have an external one lying around!

So far burned 17.1GB out of... probably about 50 I have to burn. Uuuuuugh.

I just watched Baccano! 14 and... all I can really say is that Tomokazu Sugita playing Graham is so distracting. Especially since he talks almost the same way as Gintoki (except more violent!).

Okay, I nave never ever actually felt the need to embed a YouTube video until now. Even though the only person who probably cares is Ali and she is also on the Reborn comm and has likely seen it there.

Well, maybe D will be amused, since she is cosplaying this freak. XD

Spring Anime CHALLENGE part 3

Real Drive
On the fence about this one, too. On one hand, the premise is pretty interesting... on the other, I have no real idea what that premise is. XD Magical soundwaves from the ocean floor destroy things for no reason? Cyberbrains! Androids! What is going on!
Also I find the utterly random fanservice to be severely off-putting. In a realistic show like this, that is about SCIENCE and OLD MEN why do we have pantyflashing going on? Seriously should they be giving high school girls who take care of old folks skirts that short? They're going to give the old men heart attacks.
Though maybe it was to make up for the SUDDEN NAKED OLD MAN that happened.

S.A.
I want to like this show. I really want to like it. The plot is adorable... I'm happy that it's the guy who's pining away and can't say anything and the girl who's too dumb to notice. Buuut it just felt really flat. The first episode threw these seven kids at us, but shoved all their eccentricities in our faces without any other kind of characterization. So we've got the responsible-type guy who takes care of bizarre animals, the twins (one of whom actually seems pretty normal and the other of whom does not speak and apparently has a deadly singing voice), the tea-obsessed responsible-type girl who is secretly an ogre-woman or whatever (and really randomly fangirls Hikari out of nowhere at one point), and the weirdo guy who is obsessed with eating and, I don't know, disappears randomly all the time (he's not as cute about this as, say, Morita). And then the main characters, who are a dense girl obsessed with beating Lelouch the perfect guy who secretly is in love with her.
I'll give it a few more episodes to get better but if it doesn't improve quick I won't be watching it anymore.
(note: I watched ep 2 since I wrote this and it was perhaps even more mediocre and lackluster than ep 1! Yay! Will probably give it one more episode to hook me, though, because this is my last week of school and I will have nothing better to do with my time.)

Nabari no Ou
Now this, on the other hand, I feel like I shouldn't like as much as I do. I'm really trying to narrow down my choices more than broaden them but no matter how generic this show ends up getting I have a feeling I will never drop it. I'm not even sure what it is about it that I find so great... The plot is wholly unoriginal (ninjas! reluctant boy who is the heir to great power! yaaawwn!), the jokes are nothing new, nor is the execution of them particularly noteworthy but I just find it so very entertaining. I know that they're setting up for some kind of super-blahblahblah power up blah blah blah deal but right now... I think it is mostly just Miharu that I can't resist. He's adorable. He uses his powers for evil. Though I really like all of the characters so far. Their quirks are pretty well played.
Also I am desperately curious as to who all the random people in the (totally excellent; perhaps my favorite of the season) opening sequence. At least Hat Guy appears to be showing up in the next episode.

Macross Frontier
Excellent. Excellent, excellent. Thanks for telling me to watch this, [info]kirarakim. I can't wait for more (though I still haven't watched the preview episode to see what the difference is).

Allison and Lillia
To be honest, I'm a little disappointed with this. I think my expectations were ridiculously high, and if they hadn't been so high I wouldn't have been disappointed at all, but still. I haven't watched the second episode yet, and I definitely will because I don't think that this show can possibly be bad even with my disappointment. I think mostly it is the art that bothers me... it's pretty, well, lackluster. The style used reminds me of older shows, but in a very bad way. And unfortunately there wasn't enough story in the first episode to get me past the art style.
We'll see how it goes.

Himitsu
I'm not even sure what the full title of this show is anymore... the sub group I got it from has it as "Himitsu - The Revelation" but ANN has it as "Himitsu - Top Secret." Whatever! I hated it either way.

I have like two more shows I'm planning to watch, so there will be at least one more post of these. I just want to get this one posted before I start nitpicking the shows I've already reviewed. XD

Though I do want to note I watched episode 2 of The Daughter of Twenty Faces and then immediately went and bought the first two volumes of the manga. Hahaha. No, they're not in English... I think I'm becoming obsessed.

Soul Eater
This show is awesome. Awesome action, awesome music, awesome animation. The humor is somewhat cliched but even cliched humor can be hilarious if the execution is good. I can't wait for episode 3's introduction of Death the Kid. I totally recommend this show.
Also I want to cosplay Maka.

The Daughter of Twenty Faces/Nijuu mensou no musume
If nothing else, Chiko is cuuuute. Really this show has a lot going for it. Adorable lead, it's about thieves, 20 Faces himself is awesome, it's set in the early fifties, and they have a gigantic airship. I really have always loved that over-the-top phantom thief stuff. As soon as the advance warnings start showing up I am delighted. XD Though I don't really think the first episode gave that good an impression, I'm looking forward to more anyway.

Itazura na Kiss
Shoujo romance for the season... The first ep was kind of dumb, though. I'll probably give it a few more episodes before I really make a decision on it, but I think if Kotoko just develops some guts I'll enjoy it. She's way too much of a wuss in the first episode. Come on, chew stupid what's-his-name out more! He's an asshole!

Wagaya no Oinari-sama
I'm not sure I get this show. I can't tell if it's trying to be a serious supernatural drama, or a half-assed comedy, or what the hell. I really enjoyed the first episode... but I'm not sure if I'm going to keep watching it or not.

Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
Not watching more of this. It was pretty funny buuut I'd rather watch shows I enjoy more.

Still have to watch Nabari no Ou and Allison and Lillia. I keep forgetting to download S.A. Neither Junjou Romantica nor Library Wars have been subbed yet? WTF. Also I've given up on Bus Gamer before even watching any of it, just based on the random bits Ali showed me of it. Ah, and I downloaded Himitsu - The Revelation but I haven't watched that yet either. I may still be giving Crystal Blaze a shot, and also Amatsuki.

So now I've got four shows I'm definitely following and two I dunno about. And some I haven't tried yet. And Chi's Sweet Home which doesn't count because it's so short (the way the damn cat got his name killed me).

Spring anime instead of taking a shower

So Spring anime season has started up. Horrors, right? Let's see how quickly I can get behind on any of the shows I'm watching.

Just because I feel like slacking, I'll yarble on about the few things I've already watched.

Code Geass L2
WHYYYYYY

Chi's Sweet Home
Is the cutest thing in the entire world. I don't care if you hate cats or whatever. Go download this show. Only five minute episodes! Come on! What have you got to lose!

Except it's making me want a kitty even more than I did in the first place. XD

Kanokon
Uh. Don't watch this. Don't even think about it. I probably shouldn't even be admitting I downloaded the first episode, or that I actually watched it all the way through. It has hence been deleted. Though I'm kind of sad because I liked Chizuru's brother.

Kure-nai
I have been curious about this series forever but far, far too lazy to try to find out if anyone's translated it (the novel series, that is... I dunno about the manga). Why do they keep making anime based off of interesting novel series. I seriously need to start studying my Japanese hardcore so I can read Spice and Wolf and now this (at least there's people translating Suzumiya Haruhi and Baccano!). Anyway. Little is explained in the first episode... Kurenai himself (whatever the hell his given name is) is cute, though. So put upon. And Murasaki is even cuter. Adorable spoiled little perfect Japanese girl ahoy! This is a horrible review, isn't it? XD I recommend giving this a try, though.

Other shows that either haven't started yet, haven't been subbed yet, or I just haven't downloaded and watched yet that I intend to:
-Nabari no Ou (I doubt I'll watch it all, but I did read some of the manga and liked it so I feel obliged)
-Nijuu-Mensou no Musume (I'm a sucker for shows about theifs)
-S.A. (I dunno...)
-Allison to Lillia (was there ever any doubt?)
-Library Wars (naturally)
-Junjou Romantica (which I'll be watching with Suutan whenever she actually manages Friday evenings off work)
-Bus Gamer (I doubt I'll carry through with this, either, but I feel obliged)

I'm curious about Itazura na Kiss and Crystal Blaze as well, but we'll see. As I'm sure everyone knows by now I'm really horrible at keeping up with things so anything that doesn't really catch my interest right off will more than likely drop by the wayside. I'll probably download more than just what's on this list, too, depending on what groups are subbing what.

Ah, I've also been watching Mnemosyne, which I actually rather like even if it's kind of... mature-themed. XD I've been hesitant about recommending to to people because of that, but it is pretty interesting.

And I can't remember if I mentioned it but I started Hatenkou Yuugi. Kind of, well, incredibly stupid but I found the first two eps pretty hilarious. I was watching it with Sarah but with Moonlight starting back up again and Junjou Romantica and her working all the damn time I'm probably going to ask her if she cares whether or not I just finish it up without her.

Okay, now I gotta take a shower and eat lunch and go to work.

Rare anime post!

yankee
Since I do it so very rarely, other than to link random YouTube shit and make one-liner posts/fangirlish glee posts, I am going to talk about the anime series I am currently watching (or failing to watch, as it may be).

Spice and Wolf
I'm really enjoying this show, but I haven't really been recommending it to anyone (other than to force the completely adorable end credit sequence on everyone, anyway). I think I kind of expect no one else to like it, so that's why. My reasons for liking it are mainly because I'm a mythology nerd, but the show is far more merchant merchant merchant merchant selling selling selling selling deals deals deals deals than anything else. XD But it really hasn't gotten old yet (I've only watched 1-4... I've got 5, but I haven't had the chance to watch it yet).
I love the characters, too, even if I don't fully understand their motivations (or perhaps that's why I love them?). Horo especially, but I'm warming up to guy dude (I got into the habit of calling him that and now I can never remember his real name when I'm not actually watching the show... is that sad?).

Minami-ke ~Okawari~
Okay, I've only managed two eps of this so far, so maybe it will just take some more getting used to, but... I'm really not enjoying Okawari. The first season I will praise all over the place. It's probably my favorite slice-of-life/comedy I've ever seen. Mostly because I can identify with practically every character (maybe not Hosaka) and no matter how weird it gets I can totally see just about everything that goes on in the Minami household happening with my family (we're all pretty weird).
In Okawari, the humor's still there, and still hilarious, but the whole feel of the show has changed due to the new character designs and the new settings. The new settings really throw me off, especially because Haruka's high school suddenly looks like either a cram school or a college. Chiaki's looks randomly European. Their apartment has also gotten weird... either it is suddenly huge or they have a magical size-changing table, or I'm missing something. And the bizarro hair gradient thing that they've got going on is kind of gross. Especially sandaime banchou girl's (whatever her name is) freaky blonde-to-chalkboard green hair. WTF. And perhaps the most jarring and distracting to me, the way all the background characters are colored black. It's like the world is suddenly inhabited by Shadow Girls. I can't even see any reason why. The only thing I could think of is that the director wants the focus to remain on the main characters, but honestly I could ignore the background characters a whole hell of a lot easier before.
At least Hosaka is still Hosaka (also suddenly very built, but I don't think I can complain there).

Aaand... that's pretty much all I'm watching right now. XD I've gotten far behind on Shugo Chara, Ghost Hound, Zetsubou-sensei, Gintama, and ef. I still need to finish Dennou Coil, too, but I only ever manage to watch stuff over breakfast or lunch anymore, and I keep thinking "Oh, I should save this for sometime when I can enjoy it more." Ali, next time you've got a free weekend, do you feel like marathoning 14+? XD
I also still haven't finished Honey and Clover because I fail hard like that. I'll probably start watching it again once Shoujo Beat has caught up to where I left off on the anime...

I guess I'm kind of sort of watching Reborn too, but that's terrible (I know I say the manga's bad, but the manga is like a beautiful work of art compared to the pile of shit that is the anime) so it doesn't count.

Tonight, though, I'm just going to play more Odin Sphere. :D

Watched the two short preview clips for Geass R2. D:

WTF is Lolo. Lulu's little brother? Older brother (doesn't look it, but that text was going way too fast for me to follow and it's only 6:15 so I don't have the brain to mess with it)? He's creepy.

WTF happened at the end of season 1? They showed both Lulu and Suzaku in the prevew... I wonder if my bet is right and it's going to start off like nothing ever happened there.

But the biggest question is, of course, WILL ORANGE BE IN IT?

Well, Ali and I just finished Gurren Lagann... which of course makes me want to TYPE IN ALL CAPS AND USE LOTS OF EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the most hilarious thing that happened in the entire show was when Simon's goggles evolved into those stupid star glasses. For real. What the hell was that. The sad thing is earlier we'd been joking about where those glasses were going to come from, and we decided that they'd probably appear as a physical manifestation of Simon's manliness. And sure enough!

But Viral's whatever-the-hell he shouted when they combined with what's-it-called was also pretty epic. I wish I'd written it down so I could quote it at people like Ali now can. Oh, Viral. ♥ I have totally joined your vast legion of fangirls.

Man, anyone who's not watching Minami-ke should be. I thought it was cute but nothing special until ep 4. Now that Hosaka-senpai's been introduced, the show's level of special is through the roof.

He is like ten times as awesome for being voiced by Daisuke Ono. The sad thing is, he really does remind me of Itsuki. Just replace Haruka in all his fantasies with Kyon...
